Keewaydin Expansion Update #13 - March 15, 2013

The new campus expansion has transformed over the last few weeks. While most construction activities are happening on the interior, some exterior installations are also underway, such as brick masonry and roofing.

Starting on the first floor, most of the interior walls are framed with steel metal studs, and soon to follow will be gypsum board. These areas include the kitchen, bathrooms, classrooms and offices. Also on the first floor most of the concrete floor has been poured. The final areas to be poured are the cafeteria and main lobby areas. These areas are now being prepped and will be poured over the next few weeks.

The second floor concrete slab is complete and interior walls are being framed. With most of the metal studs constructed, gypsum is now being placed in some second floor areas. Duct work at the second floor is also being installed, and the mechanical room installation is underway. With most the mechanical units in place, CMU walls are being constructed to enclose the room. Work will continue on the installation of duct work and wall assemblies over the next few weeks.

At the exterior, brick masonry and sheathing is being installed. Brick is complete at the gym and is now being placed above new cafeteria and work will move to the first floor next week. Along with brick, the roofing has also been installed at north end of the new addition along the existing school.

Over the next few weeks work will be focused on the interior construction, and roofing and bricking the exterior.

Keewaydin Expansion Update #12 - February 20, 2013

The Keewaydin campus has transformed over the last few weeks as the roofs were installed, exterior studs constructed and the expansion temporary enclosed.

Before temporarily enclosing the building, work was finished on the installation of the higher roofs above the classrooms, auditorium and common spaces. Work will soon begin on finishing the lower roofs, along with the roofs at the north links to the existing building.

While the higher roofs were installed, exterior steel studs were placed at first floor on the west and south walls. Exterior studs will be placed at the second floor after the concrete floor slab is poured.

The main focus recently has been to temporary enclose the building. Starting with east corridor, bathrooms and kitchen, work has began on heating the space and thawing the ground to prepare that area for the pouring of the concrete floor slab at both the first and second floor.

On the west side of building, work has begun on heating and enclosing the first and second floor. The second floor slab was poured at the south end and now preparing to pour the remaining second slab.

Expect work to continue on the interior concrete floor slabs, mechanical and electrical work as the gymís brick exterior finishes up over the next few weeks.

Keewaydin Expansion Update #10 - January 8, 2013

The site has been busy the last few weeks and many parts of the Keewaydin addition are underway, including the gym, the first and second floor structural steel and the auditorium.

The gym has many activities going on from roof installation to brick cladding. The gym roof was installed and completed last week, and on the lower half of the exterior gym walls architectural precast panels are being prepared to be installed. Exterior brick will soon follow above and continue on the other elevations. Near the gym, the exterior of the trash and receiving areas are being cladded with brick and will be completed this week.

Moving to the west, the structural steel is erected for most of the north portion of the building addition. Steel decking is being placed on the second floor near the lobby and mechanical areas, and will continue to be installed over the next few weeks. The steel roof joists are being installed over the classrooms and have already been installed over the auditorium.

In addition to the roof joist at the auditorium, large racker beams were installed to hold precast concrete for stadium seating. The precast concrete is now in place and links to the second floor common and mechanical areas. Over the next few weeks steel work will start to wrap up, and the building will start to be enclosed from the roof down.

Expansion Update #9 - December 14, 2012

The snow did not stop the progress at the Keewaydin School, the snow on the gym roof has been removed and the site has been shoveled. There are several projects underway at the site this week, including work at the gym, steel installation and exterior cladding, and will continue through winter break.

The gym has many activities in process, including placing concrete masonry units at the large pocket door enclosure and gym roof installation. These are scheduled to be completed over the next week. The gym will then be enclosed for the winter, which will allow for the start of interior elements.

Over the next few weeks the exterior brick will be placed along the gym and trash/receiving areas. This week brick was placed along the Trash/Receiving area.

Steel continues to be erected at the north portion of the building addition. The large columns at the edge of the courtyard are installed creating the double height lobby space, adjacent to the Auditorium. Formwork for the Auditorium walls are in place and concrete will be poured next week. Precast stadium seating will be installed in the next couple weeks.

Expansion Update #8 - November 30, 2012

The last few weeks have been mostly about steel at the Keewaydin campus. The campus now has 80% of the steel on site for its new addition.

Steel started at the gym last week, with the first to be erected the gym steel joists and then the gym roof decking. The decking is currently being installed and will be finished by the end of the week.

Steel is also being erecting at the northeast portion of the new addition. There are a several columns and beams that have been installed. Steel construction will continue over the next several weeks.

Other activities on site include the pouring of the foundation for planters in courtyard and completion of the slab in the receiving area. Mechanical work and landscaping for the courtyard will continue over the coming weeks. 8-1: View from the southeast entry into the gym, the steel joists are erected, decking is staged and the decking is now being welded to the joist. 8-2: Columns and beams erected at the northeast portion of building.
