LRT Parking and Traffic Issues: Background Part 2

Points to Consider

1) Please take some time to observe what is really happening on your street or block. For instance, take note of:

  • What time of day do the parkers arrive and leave.
  • Is there a special event downtown or at the Metrodome?
  • What kind of consideration or behaviour do LRT parkers display?
  • Has your driveway or alley been blocked? More than once?
  • Have you observed "Hide-and-Fly" parkers (hint: park car and take a cab or Metro Transit to the airport)?

2) Jot down your questions or thoughts on parking or traffic changes--if any--you would like to recommend for your area or block. For instance:

  • Would a one-way street slow traffic or "open it up" for increased speed?
  • Would one-sided parking slow traffic or "open it up" for increased speed?
  • If opting for one-sided parking, which side of the street would "inherit" the parkers?
  • With one-sided parking, there will be days during Snow Emergencies with NO parking on the street. Is that acceptable?
  • Forcing parking out to adjacent blocks would increase pedestrian traffic on streets closest to the stations. Is that good or bad?
  • Is there enough local bus service to attract area residents to ride to the stations?
  • Is two-hour parking realistically long enough for trips downtown or to the MOA and back?
  • Who would pay for the extra cost of time-limited parking enforcement?
  • Are all-day commuters, sports & event fans, or short-trippers more of an issue?

3) If considering a Critical Parking Area (permit parking only) for your block, please read the ordinance (here) , then consider the following:

  • Would a $25 annual parking permit fee--plus a first-time $10 registration fee--per vehicle be a hardship on people with fixed income?
  • Would those residents also be willing to purchase "floating" permits for guests and repair/maintenance vehicles (i.e., the Sewer Rooter truck)?
  • Would those permits be considered an "additional tax," or be misconstrued as a "reserved parking spot" by residents?
  • How would a parking ban effect businesses that rely on on-street parking, i.e., Cap's Grille?

3) Print the map (for 50th St. area. Printed copies are available at the NENA office). Consider the following:

  • Consider traffic patterns and, if needed, what might be done to change them.
  • How would a change to one or more blocks effect the surrounding blocks?
  • Would you make exceptions for handicapped persons, the elderly, or people with young children, etc.?

4) Let NENA know how you feel

  • email Email your comments to parking@nokomiseast.org, OR
