We are excited to announce we are hiring a Communications and Engagement Coordinator!
The Nokomis East Neighborhood Association (NENA) is excited to announce that we are hiring a part-time Communications and Engagement Coordinator. This position will work with NENA’s Executive Director to implement NENA’s programmatic and communications strategies. NENA is seeking a highly-skilled candidate to join our neighborhood team who shares our passion and commitment to community-driven initiatives and place-based planning.
NENA’s mission is to better the quality of life and build a sense of community pride by sponsoring actions which help our environment, businesses, and homes. Our growing nonprofit organization serves the southeast Minneapolis neighborhoods of Keewaydin, Minnehaha, Morris Park and Wenonah. Our goals are to promote neighborhood improvement and revitalization, and to encourage citizen participation in civic affairs.

Position Details:
Location: | Minneapolis. Hybrid 1-2 days in office per week. |
Job Type: | Part-time 20 hours per week flexible schedule with some evenings and occasional weekends. |
Salary: | $24,000 - $26,000 annually, depending on candidate qualifications and experience. |
Benefits: | Includes generous paid time off, up to a 3% match on an employee-owned retirement plan, monthly stipend in lieu of medical benefits, and training opportunities. |
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
The ideal applicant will be a self-starter, organized, have strong interpersonal skills and demonstrate creativity and innovation in program management, communications and community outreach.
Program and Committee Management (50%):
As a Neighborhood Association, we want to ensure we are creating events and programs that matter most to our community. The person in this position will partner with program partners including the City of Minneapolis; schools, parks, library, businesses, the business association, housing and community development nonprofits, and environmental stewardship organizations to grow events and make sure they are relevant to the community’s needs.
Communications (30%): NENA tells our story and promotes our community. The person in this position will create a long-term communications strategy that will include social media, writing our monthly community newsletter, and creating advertisements and articles for our local newspaper. Internally, they will serve as staff support to NENA committees and volunteers.
Administrative Tasks (10%): As a small nonprofit, we all need to share those pesky administrative tasks. Some of these include written reporting activities, filling out timesheets, printing, copying, managing google drive, managing volunteer and newsletter database, etc. Outreach & Engagement (10%): The primary responsibility of a neighborhood association is to ensure we are relevant and helpful to the community. This person filling this position will engage with Nokomis East residents regularly. Along with the Executive Director, board members, and volunteers, the person in this position will be asked to door-knock five months out of the year. Outreach strategies will engage underserved residents, solicit ideas, cultivate leaders and help build place-based programming leading the community to self-determined outcomes. The position will recruit leaders and help plan events and secure resources of interest to the neighborhood. This position will also staff Board Committees as needed. Duties and responsibilities may be adjusted in response to organizational needs, and additional tasks may be assigned as necessary. Candidate Qualifications Required Qualifications: ● Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
● Excellent personal accountability, self-motivation and follow through skills.
● Able to pay attention to details.
● Outstanding written and verbal skills.
● Experience with, and commitment to community-based work.
● Open and flexible, plus demonstrated experience working with diverse constituencies including by age, gender, race, ethnicity and income levels.
● Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, and other basic computing skills.
● Access to transportation to attend meetings outside of the neighborhood.
● Proven track record of organizing and motivating people to accomplish mutually agreed upon goals.
● Strong people skills, integrity and the ability to speak with confidence and authority on behalf of the neighborhood.
● Able to work the occasional evenings and weekends (up to 2 evenings per week)
Preferred Qualifications:
● Experience with Housing, Commercial, Community Development and/or Green Initiatives programs.
● Experience building and working in coalitions, partnerships and collaborative relationships.
● Experience with grant writing and individual fundraising campaigns.
● Proficiency in Spanish and/or Somali.
● Experience with nonprofit project management.
● Strong facilitation skills and ability to manage conflict.
● Knowledge of community organizing theory and practice, community and economic development, grassroots activism, volunteer management and/or membership organizations.
