Nokomis East Food Shelf
The Nokomis East Food Distribution began in 2021 as a response to food insecurity during the COVID-19. Recognizing a high need in the Nokomis East neighborhood, community partners came together - Nokomis East Neighborhood Association, Good in the 'Hood, Trinity Lutheran of Minnehaha Falls, and Crosstown Covenant Church - to offer a twice monthly food distribution at Crosstown Covenant Church.
The food shelf is a choice model, where shoppers may select food that meets the needs of their families based on what is available. The food shelf offers a variety of items, including fresh produce, proteins such as eggs, meat, and beans, dry and canned goods, and hygiene items.
NENA’s role in the food shelf is to support day-of onsite logistics, including managing inventory, overseeing volunteers, distribution strategy, and ensuring shoppers have a dignified and positive experience.
The food shelf relies heavily on volunteers to support the distribution, in 2025 volunteers served 1,300 hours preparing and culling food, and supporting shoppers!
